The pencel hardness test is to determine the resistance of coating materials or lacquers to scratch effects on the surface.
Widely used for furniture or vehicle lacquers, but is also a usdfulaid in the development of synthetic resins or other film forming substances.14 pencils from grade 6B to 6H are provided.(Note:ASTM 3363 specifies 14 pencils. ISO 15184 required 20 pencil 9B-9H, ordered seperately).
Ⅱ. Structure and working principle: (figure):
Generally scratch hardnes is measured by moving a more or less sharp object under a known pressure over the surface of the material, inclined at an angel of (45±1)°。According to the principle of leverage, the instrument is designed so that it is in a horizontal position, the tip of the pencil exerts a force of :500±10 grams, 750±10 gram, and 1000±10 grams, on the paint surface.
